LBNL’s China Energy Group’s efforts in working with Chinese cities to promote clean energy development was recognized in EERE International’s 2016 Year in Review released on January 19, 2017.
“Clean energy development in Chinese cities: China is calling for cities to peak their emissions before 2030. With nearly 100 cities with more than 1 million people, the opportunity space for clean development is enormous. We supported training on technical tools developed by experts at LBNL to assist with urban planning and evaluation of policies and actions on emissions. Activities included a training with more than 10 cities in conjunction with the second annual U.S.-China Climate-Smart/Low-Carbon Cities Summit and one with nine cities from Southern China. We worked closely with four major cities to do more in-depth modeling and road mapping to find pathways towards cities’ peaking goal.” (link: https://energy.gov/eere/articles/eere-international-2016-year-review)
In 2016, LBNL provided introductory training on LBNL’s low-carbon eco-city development tools and policy guidebooks to more than 100 personnel representing more than 15 Chinese cities and participated in the second annual US-China Climate-Smart/Low Carbon Cities Summit. China Energy Group staff provided in-depth training and capacity building on LBNL’s low-carbon eco-city development tools, particularly the GREAT and BEST-Low Carbon Cities tools to these cities, and provided technical assistance to the cities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou in their future planning. The China Energy Group also provided analytical support for the U.S.-China Climate Change Working Group Climate-Smart/Low-Carbon Cities Initiative and is also serving as Secretariat for U.S.-China EcoPartnership Program.
